HYPERWORDS

HyperWords is a word game, brain teaser, and language power-tool for iPod Touch and iPhone. It includes a powerful SCRABBLE® Word look up, a Crossword Puzzle Solver, a vocabulary building Word Quiz, and a Reference Dictionary.

Unlike other, similar applications, HyperWords does not require Internet access. Although you can link to useful websites to find additional information relating to a word, there's no need to do so. All the stuff you need is right there in your pocket!

Cheating at Scrabble has never been so much fun, and the word quiz is great fun too.

The word quiz presents you with a new word, often quite obscure, and asks you to work out which of three definitions fits the best. It's amazing how often you can work out the meaning from the roots of the word, or from the definition context.

The Puzzle Solver works for SCRABBLE®, and lots of other anagram puzzles. One favorite is the London Times' daily Polygon puzzle. Put in all of the letters that you want to include in the returned word list, capitalizing any letters that must be included in each word.

The Crossword Solver takes a pattern, like "m..t", or ".h..p" and up to three useful words from the crossword clue. The clue words are used to help work out which words are most likely to fit the crossword.

WORD QUIZ

In the Word Quiz, select the definition that most closely fits the word shown at the top of the screen. Hyperwords will keep track of your "wins and losses", and also remind you how many words you may have skipped over.

The occasional long definition can still be viewed, by scrolling the definition up and down.

The Help button will remind you if you forget how to do it.

And Clear will reset the counters back to zero, as well as giving you a new word to look at.

CROSSWORD SOLVER

Using the Crosswrd Solver requires a little understanding of patterns. Let's say you are looking for a word that's 8 letters long, with an M in the first position and an A on the 4th position.

In this case, put: M..A.... into the Word Pattern field.

And let's say that the clue is, "Frequently accompanied by cheese", so enter CHEESE into the first clue word field. Press Search, and a list of 108 words is returned.

Now press SHOW MATCHES and MACARONI is the second word in the list!

DICTIONARY

The Dictionary begins with a scrollable list of virtual Pages, choose the page that you want from the list, and that page will come up.

Now scroll to the word that you want, choose it, and you'll be shown a Definition Card. Tap on the card, and the backside will present you with a few good websites where you can, if you choose, get additional information about the word.

WORD UNSCRAMBLER

The SCRAMBLE Word Unscrambler works great for SCRABBLE, Polygon Puzzles, and other anagram puzzles.

Let's say you're playing scrabble, and you have the letters MAEFGH and a BLANK tile in front of you. You put maefg. (dot means BLANK) into the letters field. Then you pick some open points on the scrabble board where you might play your letters. Enter the points by their letters in the second line. In the example, a SEARCH gives us some 13 point words - I'll have a look at MEGOHM a bit later.

Now let's say that you're playing a polygon puzzle. There are 7 letters, and L has to be used every time, enter them with the "must have" letter(s) capitalized like this: Locedwk

And WEDLOCK comes back at the top of the list.

DEFINITIONS

Whether using the Dictionary or any of the other application functions, you can always look at the common definitions of the word.

Tap on the "Definition Card", and on the back there are a few websites that you can go to, to read more about the word.
